Birds Around the Reserve

Heron, pictured on the bridge over the mill weir

What better bird to mention first but the heron, because herons have made their home at Warnham LNR and you can almost guarantee to see several on almost any visit. It is fitting, then, that our logo, from a photograph by Mike Attwood, is a heron. Unmissable though the herons are, there are also a multitude of other birds to be seen around the Reserve. These include visiting cormorants, a variety of ducks, geese and swans and many smaller birds, including kingfishers, nut-hatches, tree-creepers, long-tailed tits, blue-tits, great-tits, green and spotted woodpeckers and many more.

Here is a greylag goose photographed on the grass slope by the millpond next to the path across the open meadow.

You may well see a family of swans such as these who seemed very content ambling around the paths near the dipping ponds.

Great Crested Grebes may be seen diving in the main pond and of course it is always good to see a family of these attractive birds

There are a great many coots around the Reserve, and continuing the family theme, here is a baby with parent seen in one of the dipping ponds.

The busy sounds of woodpeckers at work are familiar around the Reserve. This Greater Spotted Woodpecker was caught taking a bit of a rest.
