Friends of Warnham Local Nature Reserve

The Stag Beetle Loggery

Our Warden at the time, Sam Bayley, had long dreamt of a loggery at the Reserve to encourage stag beetles by providing standing dead wood as a nursery for their larvae. Sam’s dream is now a reality and in November 2007 in just a couple of days one of the country’s largest loggeries was erected here at Warnham. The Loggery was officially opened on April 5, 2008.

The new Loggery really is an impressive sight and is an example of effective teamwork, with Vivien Hodge providing the initial groundwork and the Committee and Wardens following through with Lottery funding support.

Here is the finished Loggery, showing the ranks of standing dead wood that should give a good home to the larvae of our stag beetles. We also expect that it will encourage the growth of some interesting fungi and provide a home for a wide variety of small creatures.
